Urdu; The Language That Sired Shayari!
If you listen to news about South Asia, you must have heard the mention of Urdu language. In fact, the language is so spread in this part of the world that most people use it. It is no wonder that it is an official language in Pakistan and an official language in 5 states in neighbouring India. I guess you are wondering why am harping about a language that is not common outside that part of the world.
Well, if you are a poetry reader, you must have heard of the Urdu Shayari. Yes, this is one of the most popular poetic forms that have origins in folklore.
The beauty of the Urdu Shayari is its contemporary relevance and the unique structures. It is hard to get poetry that has so many distinct forms and yet addresses divergent issues in a refreshing manner. What’s more, if you are one of those readers quickly turned off by poems, then I recommend these simple yet captivating pieces.
The language arose from contact between different groups in the Indian subcontinent such as the Persian and Turks and this enriches it with very many features that are not available in modern languages. Reading the Urdu poems is thus an exploration of centuries of heritage. The Urdu poetry for which this language is best known addresses many issues in society. The translations are very close to the originals and readers will experience issues such as love, marriage, death and even political commentaries on the current economic situation.
